Sandakan Track Mini-highlights Walk
(two days/one night. Minimum 2 people)

This tour, departing daily from Kota Kinabalu, provides a unique opportunity to walk a most interesting section of the Sandakan Track, between Nalapak and Muruk. Please note that the duration of each day's walk is subject to weather and track conditions and the physical fitness of the participants.

Day 1: (L/D)

Depart Kota Kinabalu by motor vehicle for the starting point, near Nalapak. Follow the POW route through light jungle and farmland to Quailey's Hilland memorial. After an inspection of the Sabah Tea Plantation factory and Chinese-style lunch at the restaurant, which affords wonderful views of Mt Kinabalu, south-east Asia's highest peak. After lunch continue walking to Muruk village, the site of  a large POW staging camp. Transfer by vehicle to Ranau, where the first death march ended, then a short drive to  Slagon Homestay, a private country estate,  with its comfortable facilities and delicious home-style cooking. Walk is five hours' duration, easy to moderate grade.

Day 2: (FB/L)

After breakfast, transfer to The Last Camp. After visiting the POW Memorial, descend to the floor of a beautiful valley to inspect the camp site where the last of the POWs died.  From here, a scenic drive takes you to the the magnificently restored Kundasang War Memorial, on the side of Mt Kinabalu. Lunch is at Mt Kinabalu Hotel and Spa, with spectacular views of the mountain. After lunch, transfer back to Kota Kinabalu, with an opportunity to visit local market stalls on the way. 

What to bring:

Comfortable walking shoes/boots,  loose and comfortable clothing, personal items, small day pack for trekking, shady hat, small refillable water bottle, sun screen, folding solar umbrella, insect repellent & camera. Drinking water while trekking and at the overnight accommodation is provided. Incidental beverages are at own expense.
